Wernher Ovalle, M.D.Dr. Ovalle is a board-certified Internal Medicine physician who has been in private practice since 1999. He received his medical degree from University of California, San Diego, and completed his residency training at the University of Washington. He finished at UW with highest honors, and that program remains among the top three primary care programs in the United States (2018 US News & World Ranking). During his training, Dr. Ovalle learned to become an astute clinician, a good listener and excellent diagnostician. More importantly, he developed a unique ability to connect with patients; to be sympathetic and understanding when patients experience trying times, involving both physical and mental illness.
During the last 20 years, it was this desire that led Dr. Ovalle to develop his own concierge medicine program. It allowed for him to have the proper space and time with patients, to best understand and treat their medical conditions; all the while, getting to know patients and their families in a personable and comfortable environment. “White-coat hypertension doesn’t happen much in my office,” Dr. Ovalle has said, “Seeing your doc shouldn’t be a stressful event. I want patients to feel like my office is a familiar, safe place, where you leave feeling better than when you once came. And patients know above all, that I will be there for them. Dr. Ovalle has also developed an interest in geriatric care. Over the last 16 years he has served as Medical Director at numerous Skilled Nursing Facilities, but over the last 8 years has been Director at Crystal Cove Care Center. It’s been here that Dr. Ovalle has developed numerous clinical advances to help make this nursing home the preferred facility for Hoag Hospital. He is also Medical Director for Care Choices Home Health, which has distinguished itself for exceptional clinical outcomes, and has also become a preferred Home Health provider for Hoag Hospital. With an eye towards the community, Dr. Ovalle has felt it is important to contribute his own efforts to help underserved families. As an inducted officer for the U.S. Surgeon General’s office, he was instrumental in establishing an outpatient mobile clinic to bring medical care to migrant farm camps in San Diego, which deeply lack medical care. More recently, Dr. Ovalle has established the “Our Lady of Perpetual Help” scholarship program to assist local underserved children obtain better educational opportunities. Dr. Ovalle enjoys spending time with his beautiful wife of 23 years, Rose, and their three boys, Josh, Lucas and Elijah. He enjoys serving as the team doctor for the Brethren Christian football team, and when time allows, he plays piano and drums with his boys who are also musically inclined. |
